Thomas Bowers was born in Oldcastle, Co. Meath, Ireland, on May 26, 1904. He arrived in Canada in 1923, and after a few moves, settled in Chilliwack to farm. Ill health forced him to go to Tranquille in Kamloops and there he learned nursing and became a male nurse.
Tom married Dorothy Peters in Kamloops and together they had three children Jill, Jack and Joan. He left Tranquille to work in the funeral profession and in 1947, they moved to Salmon Am.
On January 1, 1947, Tom opened Bowers Funeral Home, purchasing the existing funeral home in Salmon Arm, from M.M. Carroll, which had been operating since 1919.
Tom worked hard, and continued to improve the business and the facilities until he sold the business to his son, Jack, in 1972.
Outside of work, Tom enjoyed gardening (especially his rose garden), his family, and a continued correspondence with his extended family in Ireland. He was also active in the community, being a member of the Masonic Lodge, and a former Alderman for the Village of Salmon Arm. He participated in several Public Works projects, including the construction of Fletcher Pool during the 1950s.
Thomas Bowers passed away on July 25, 1986.
